What is a gypsum? |
|
|
Gypsum is also produced synthetically. One process uses the desulfurization of environmentally harmful flue gases at fossil-fuel burning power plants to create benign and beneficial gypsum. |

(Q.)
May I fasten a fire rated gypsum wall partition with screws instead
of nails?
(A.)
Yes, screws may be used as
an alternative to nails, but must be substituted one for one with the
head diameter and length equal or greater than required for the nails.
Spacing of the screws can be no greater than that of the nails.
(Q.)
Is it necessary to tape the joints in the base layers of fire- resistance
rated multi-layer gypsum board systems to maintain the fire resistance
rating?
(A.)
No. In multi-layer systems,
the joints and fasteners in the base layers are covered and protected
by the overlaying layers of gypsum board.
(Q.)
What is the difference between "regular" and "type X"
gypsum board?
(A.) Regular gypsum has naturally occurring fire resistance due to the presence of gypsum in the core. Type X has special core additives to increase the natural fire resistance. (Q.)
What is an "improved Type X" gypsum board?
(A.) "Improved Type X" gypsum board is a specially formulated gypsum board, meeting all the requirements of Type X gypsum board, with additional properties to further enhance the fire resistive characteristics of the product. (Q.)
What is the difference between Square Edge (S.E.) and Recessed (Tapered)
Edge (T.E.)?
(A.)
Square Edge is commonly used for interior walls and ceilings
in a commercial construction where speed is crucial. It also allows
sheets to be butted together neatly. Those butt joints may be
covered with aluminum, vinyl or timber mouldings. Tapered
Edge is generally used for interior walls and ceilings.
Joints between adjacent may be reinforced and concealed with joint tape.
Recess on face side allows formation of shallow channel for joint reinforcement.
Provides smooth, even and continuous surface once joined.
(Q.)
What type of gypsum board would you recommend for use on the walls and
ceiling of my indoor swimming enclosure?
(A.)
NONE. Gypsum Board is
NOT recommended for use where there will be direct exposure to water
or continuous high humidity conditions such as found in saunas,
steam rooms, gang shower rooms or swimming pool enclosures.
(Q.)
My home was in flood and the wallboard in my basement was exposed to
flood water. Do I have to replace the wall board in my basement?
(A.)
YES, Wallboard that has
been soaked by flood water can be a permanent health hazard. When
the wallboard finally dries, there will still be mud and the contaminants
dried inside and to the wallboard.
