1.  Follow good safety practices during handling and installation.

2.

Decide what you want your ceiling to look like before you start.

-Do you want a 24" x 48" layout, or 24" x 24"?

-Do you want the ceiling tee’s to run parallel to walls, or diagonal? (Diagonal installation is a bit trickier to plan and install, but offers a more dramatic look, especially with some of the patterned ceiling panels available today.

-Will you be installing lighting into the ceiling? (Make sure there is enough room to install lights where you want them).

3.  Familiarize yourself with the components you will be installing.

Wall Mould is the painted trim that is secured to walls around the perimeter of the ceiling.

Main Runners and Cross tees are the framing members that make up the ceiling grid.

Main Runners are suspended from the joists above, 48" apart and connected end-to-end.

48" Cross Tees are attached to the Main Runners every 24".

24" Cross Tees (for 24" x 24" layouts) are attached to the mid point of 48" Cross Tees.

4.

Plan your layout.

Measure your room and make a drawing showing your perimeter walls. Include window bulkheads, columns, stairwells etc. that may come in contact with the ceiling. If you are boxing these items in, show their dimensions.

Draw your desired layout.

If possible, start your layout at the room centre and work out towards the perimeters.

Try to keep the grid layout as simple as possible.

Keep panels at the perimeter as even in size as possible and avoid small panels at the perimeter.

Avoid complex perimeter details. Remember, you are going to have to cut panels to fit the layout you design.

Layout Main Runners 48" apart in one direction and Cross Tees 24" apart in the opposite direction.

If possible, draw Main Runners perpendicular to ceiling joists. This will give you the most flexibility when it comes to hanging the Main Runners from the ceiling joists.

Show your light fixture locations.

5.

Estimate the materials you will need.

For Wall Mould, add the total lineal footage around the perimeter and divide by the length of the piece (12’).

For pieces of Main Runners add the total lineal footage on your layout and divide by the length of the piece (12’).

For pieces of 48" Cross Tees, add the total lineal footage on your layout and divide by 4.

For pieces of 24" Cross Tees, add the total lineal footage on your layout and divide by 2.

Add extra pieces as needed to offset material lost in cutting around perimeters.

Hanger Wire, Wood Eye Lags and fastener quantities as required.
